The Connection Between Perfumery and Theater

The Connection Between Perfumery and Theater

Perfumery and theater are two different worlds. Perfumery is the craft of formulating scents through the careful selection and blending of odoriferous substances to create fragrant products to “be applied to the human body for beautification, promoting attractiveness, or imparting a pleasant scent”, as per The Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Theatre is a multidisciplinary art form that integrates acting, directing, design, lights, sounds and more to tell a story in real time in front of an audience within a performance space.

Despite their differences, there is an essential feature that they have in common. Finding this common essential feature starts with exploring why we remember certain perfumes and plays for a long time.

What makes a theatrical performance memorable? We all remember different things about a play: the artistic performance of its actors, a specific act, scene or phrase, the music or the costumes, the scenography etc. But what really makes a theatrical performance memorable is the authentic emotion that connects us, the actors and the spectators. In that moment, when the emotion lived by the actors is real and palpable, us, the spectators become participants with the actors to the act of artistic creation. We feel what they feel, we live what they live. Sometimes, for a moment. But when that feeling and emotion remained with us after the show ended, it changed us. That is the power of the transformative art.

The world of artisanal perfumery is a quiet world where the artisan, using its knowledge and creative skills brings to life scents that mean something to the perfumer and hopefully, to other people. What it is less known is that perfumery is an art on its own. Yes, art in its full complexity.  A perfume becomes a real piece of art when it transforms the mind and soul of the person wearing it, as it did with the artist that created it in the first place. This is what theater and artisan perfumery have in common, the power of the transformative art.

An artistic piece can use words or other modalities to tell a story, its story. Can a story be told without words?

A skilled actor can communicate more through silence than through an entire monologue. A glance, a hesitation, a pause or a facial expression may reveal more about true feelings than words can express. Other times, even theatrical objects can reveal unspoken emotions of the characters.

Let’s take Miklós László’s Parfumerie romantic play that will be presented at Soulpepper Theater in Toronto, ON between Nov. 18th and Dec. 20th 2026. A single red carnation, a carnation that the protagonists, George Horvath and Amalia Balash were supposed to wear during their first in-person meeting, becomes more than a flower. After their missed encounter, George's wilted red carnation that he now wears in its wallet becomes the expression of his love and longing, but also of hope that their love is immortal. A small, fading flower embodies an unrevealed love. The audience can feel George's sentiments without any spoken word.

A skilled perfumer communicates emotions through scents. But how do you know or feel what the perfumer wanted to express through a particular scent, how do you interpret what you smell? Often, we do not know why we like or not a scent until we dig deep inside us to understand why we feel the way we feel. But beyond the like or rejection of a scent, it is far more interesting to ask ourselves: “Why we feel what we feel when we wear this fragrance?” This will help us understand more about ourselves.

Do not worry. You do not need to learn about ingredients, chemical reactions, the science behind formulations, unless you really want to. You just need to ask the question: “Why?”. This is the first step towards knowledge. When a play script, a painting, a sculpture, a musical piece, a fragrance makes you ask this question, this is the beginning of self-discovery and possibly, the beginning of self-transformation through interaction with an artistic piece. This is role of art, in my opinion. This is what both authentic perfumery and theater have in common, and what both have in common with other artistic modalities.

However, in theater, no two performances are identical. The actors may follow the same script, but their state of mind, the audience, atmosphere, timing and emotional responses change each evening.

Similarly, perfumes perform uniquely for each person. While the fragrance evolves on skin through its top, heart and base notes, its perception also changes with the wearer's biological state, skin composition, personal memories, experiences and associations.

Consider Olyantis® Peaceful Ocean inspired by the Canadian Pacific coastline at Stanley Park in Vancouver. For one person, its aquatic character may evoke freedom and exploration. For another, it may suggest stillness, balance and peace. The composition remains the same. The experience becomes personal.

In both theatre and perfumery, it is you, the spectator or the wearer of the scent that completes the artistic piece, brings it fully to life and makes the art memorable.

How Do Perfumery and Theater Tell a Story Without Words?

Both perfumery and theater use multiple modalities to tell their story.

Perfumery uses scents, beautiful bottles and caps, labels and boxes, images to create unique experiences for you. Theater uses movements or stillness, sounds, lights and creative spaces to tell a story without words. While both have the ability to tell a story, they both need you to receive, feel, understand and interiorize their artistic piece, to make it your own.

The Story Continues Even After the Curtain Falls and the Scent Fades Away

The curtain falls. The actors leave. Yet something remains. Few days later, you remember a particular scene. Perhaps few words that you heard during the show have now a new meaning to you through an unexpected association or link to a personal experience or memory.

A one-of-a kind fragrance can leave a similarly enduring impression. Research into scent’s effects on brain suggests that odors can trigger deep emotional recollections and feelings that can positively or negatively impact one’s state of being.

Two different experiences, theatrical and olfactive, can remain with us for years. Their powerful effect is not related exclusively to their physical performance, but to what we remember about how they make us feel when we lived it.

Where These Two Artistic Worlds Meet

This October, Olyantis® is delighted to participate in a celebration of theatrical creativity at Soulpepper Theatre's Bootleggers Ball, taking place on October 28, 2026 at Soulpepper’s Theater in Toronto's historic Distillery District.

Inspired by the atmosphere of Jazz-Age Europe and Soulpepper's upcoming hit production of Parfumerie, the evening brings under one roof the theatrical glamour of 1920s café culture, music, elegance and unexpected surprises. Set inside a perfume shop in Budapest, Parfumerie reminds us how meaningful is to be seen as we really are.

This message resonates with us. At Olyantis®, we believe that perfumery is an art of self-expression - of you, the wearer of a scent and of the perfumer, a transformative art that connects us with ourselves, with others and with nature.

We are pleased to contribute to an exceptional evening celebrating the power of artistic expression and community spirit.

The most memorable works of art do more than attract attention. They leave something of themselves within us, they transform us.
