How to Choose a Fragrance

Finding your signature scent is a deeply personal journey of self-discovery. This guide is designed to help you navigate our collection of Eau de Parfums by considering your unique personality and desires, your biology and skin’s chemistry, time of the day, the climate where you live, seasonality, perfume’s characteristics etc.

1. How Choosing a Scent is Influenced by Your Personality & Desires

A scent is an extension of you. Choose a scent that speaks to you:

  • The Minimalist: If you prefer a fresh, elegant fragrance, see our Aquatic perfume Peaceful Ocean. It offers a "clean", sophisticated feel, yet never overpowering.
  • The Romantic: For those moved by classic beauty and art, our Floral composition Rapsodie D'É provides a timeless, bright grace.
  • The Adventurer: If you are drawn to the unknown, the Ambery-Woody, sensual Espíritu Flamenco offer a sense of mystery, suggestive of flamenco dancing and singing around a fierce camp fire under the clear night sky in Andalusia.

2. Your Biology and Skin’s Chemistry

A fragrance is never truly finished until it meets your skin. Your unique body chemistry acts as the final "ingredient" in the bottle.

  • Your surface temperature fluctuates based on your metabolic rate and hormonal cycles. Heat accelerates evaporation, making a scent bloom intensely but disappear faster. If you have a high "natural heat," look for deeper base notes like resins and woods that can withstand the warmth.
  • Oily Skin: Natural skin’s oils hold onto fragrance molecules very well. Scents may appear more intense on you, so a lighter perfume application will often suffice.
  • Dry Skin: Fragrance tends to evaporate more quickly on dry skin. To extend the life of your scent, we recommend applying an unscented moisturizer before misting your perfume to "anchor" the notes.
  • Skin pH: Every individual has a unique skin pH. This is why the same perfume can smell slightly sweeter or spicier on different persons. This is why is important to allow the scent to "settle" for 30 minutes on your skin to experience the perfume’s true “bloom”.
  • Dietary Influence: What you consume can alter the lipid (oil) composition of your skin. A diet high in spices or garlic can make certain notes turn "sour" or "sharp."

4. Time of Day

·                    Fragrances worn during the day are typically lighter, more exuberant that those worn at night. At night, richer, sensual perfumes, with heavier base notes are predominantly used.

4. Climate where you live

·                   Fragrance molecules travel differently in different atmospheric conditions. In high humidity, scents can feel heavy or "cloying," while in arid, dry climates, the alcohol evaporates quickly, requiring a stronger scent or frequent reapplication.

5. The Seasonality of Scent

Just as your wardrobe shifts with the weather, your fragrance should harmonize with the ambient temperature and light.

  • Spring & Summer: Higher temperatures amplify scent. Choose lighter fragrances, with Aquatic, Citrus or Floral notes. These light fragrances feel refreshing even in the heat.
  • Autumn & Winter: Cold air can "suppress" a fragrance. This is the time for Eau de Parfums with "heavy" base notes like Amber-Woody. This richer composition provides a sense of warmth and comfort.

6. Perfume’s Characteristics

·       Concentration. The ratio of perfume concentrate to alcohol determines both its intensity, how far the scent will travel and its longevity.

    • Eau de Toilette (EDT) (5-15% concentration). These fragrances are designed for immediacy. They are often brighter, due to top notes like citrus and light florals.
      • Pro Tip: Use an EDT for daytime wear or office environments where you want a "polished" but discreet presence.
    • Eau de Parfum (EDP) (15-20% concentration). This is the gold standard for artisanal perfumery. EDPs have a higher heart-to-base note ratio, meaning they evolve significantly over 6 to 8 hours. Olyantis’s perfumes are EDTs.
      • Pro Tip: Apply an EDP when you want your scent to tell a story from morning until evening.
    • Extrait de Parfum (20%-40% concentration). These fragrances have very little alcohol, so they don't "project" across a room; instead, they linger close to the skin for up to 24 hours.

·       Sillage (Trail). Consider how much "space" you want to cover. Some perfumes are "skin scents" (meant to be smelled only during a hug), while others have a sillage that fills a room. Your choice depends on whether you want an intimate or visible presence.

The Scent Discovery Ritual. Choosing a fragrance is a dialogue between the perfume and you – your memories, experiences, emotions, desires etc. The right fragrance for you is the one that makes you feel most like yourself in that moment.

  • Start Small: Begin with our Discovery Set to experience how our scents evolve over a full day.

  • The Rule of Three: When sampling, try no more than three scents at a time. Any more than that will overwhelm your olfactive sense, making it difficult to discern the delicate nuances of each blend.

Your fragrance is the first thing people notice, and the last thing they forget. Choose a scent that tells the story you want to be remembered by.
